We’ve been doing very well in the weekend fun department for the last month or so. Last weekend I wrote about my mushroom hunting adventures and the tick infestation. This weekend was also fun and even better than last weekend in that we didn’t have any ticks crawling on us. \nFriday night was pretty out of the ordinary, we went to Jamie’s graduation ceremony for the IU East/Purdue class of 2005. He was the class representative so he got to sit in the front with all of the many representatives from IU and Purdue. That event lasted no less than 2 hours and by the time it was over, at 8:00 we were all very hungry so we went to Golden Corral. We had a great time talking and visiting with Kristen’s grandparents and parents. Once that was over we went home and Kristen went to bed. I stayed up and watched I, Robot and played pool on the computer until around 3:00am. I don’t get to stay up late very often, so I took advantage of the opportunity. \nThe next day we went over to Kristen’s grandparents to help them buy a new computer online. We were over there most of the afternoon on Dell.com trying to find a computer that would meet their needs while also improving their computer experience overall. Once that was over we went with a friend to the movies to see National Treasure, which is a movie that Kristen thought that I would like. She was right, it had a good mix of interesting history and the Ocean’s 11 style of "smart" robbery. It was pretty unique overall and very entertaining. Once that was over it was time to go home and go to bed. \nSunday was pretty uneventful. I spent most of the day at a friend’s house playing golf on the XBox and Kristen spent most of the day at the house waiting for a phone call that never came. That evening we hung out with some friends from church and had a great time before coming home and going to bed.

Yesterday turned out to be a great day. When I got home from work I decided to mow the grass since it was getting a little long. It was nice to be outside with the soft breeze and the smell of fresh cut grass. I actually enjoyed it. There’s something about getting outside and doing work that really makes a person feel like they’re getting something accomplished. I must have been in the mood to work because I did the dishes and gathered up the recycling once I was finished with the grass. \nBeing in the mood to work outside I decided to play my John Deer American Farmer game on the computer for most of the night. It’s a very good game and I’m really impressed with the level of detail. Not only can you do the obvious things like plant crops and keep farm animals, but you can also track the market for various types of crops allowing you to sell the grain in your bins at just the right moment. The game actually gives you the feeling that you’ve been out in the fields working. \nThis morning Kristen told me that she was going to take my car to work. Her car has been having some trouble and since the part hasn’t arrived yet so it can be fixed she wasn’t comfortable driving it all of the way to Connersville. I drove her 2004 Honda Civic to work this morning and I was barely able to get into the door. It felt much like a clown car, though I’ve never experienced a real clown car first hand.

We move a lot. Everyone gives us a hard time for how many times we’ve uprooted our lives to hit the road in the RV or just bought a different house in a different part of Fort Worth. Truth be told for most of my adult life moving was a coping mechanism for me. I often tell people that my favorite days in elementary school where the days when we rearranged the desks. I love change, actually I’ve depended on change to distract me from the uncomfortable truths hidden deep inside me. But that’s the topic for another blog post, maybe.
\n\n\n\n
Over the last year I’ve spent time in therapy trying to better understand myself. It has helped greatly and through it I’ve learned to sit in uncomfortable situations when everything in me is screaming out for change, for excitement. Our plan was to travel this summer in the RV but as I was going through my therapy I found my desire to spend the summer on the road to be less and less. As I’ve settled into a different mindset we started having discussions about what really want for our lives. Do we stay in Texas? Or do we pursue our dream to live in a cooler climate and hopefully near water? In the end we knew that we couldn’t pull Lil away from her family, especially her young cousins. There are far too many sleepovers and play dates for me to ever feel okay with that decision. We’re staying in Texas.

Being confident in that decision we started talking about our plans for being here and being happy. Our plan was to spend time in our current home saving money until we found our dream home. When we finally found it we’d be financially prepared to do it comfortably. Well, the look didn’t last as long as we thought and we’re now closing on our dream home at the end of September!
The house is located in Weatherford, TX right near Lake Weatherford. We can see the freakin’ lake from our back yard and nearly every window in the back of the house. It looks nothing like Texas and we couldn’t be more excited! There’s almost nothing we would change about the house, it’s pretty perfect for us. One of the features I’m most excited about is the unfinished detached shop which we’ll be converting into a man cave/cigar lounge. It’s currently just studs and an epoxy floor but I’ve got big dreams for the space. I tend to spend 1-2 days a week sitting outside watching movies while enjoying a cigar and while my cigarden tent has been amazing this will be a definite upgrade, especially in the hot and cold months.

I’m pretty excited to try my hand at doing some of the finishing work myself, at least I think I am… I also know myself well enough to know that if it feels too overwhelming I’ll probably have to hire someone to do it.

So far the packing process is going great; Crys and I have improved our health dramatically over the last year which has made the physical activity much easier to handle. Crys definitely has more than her fair share of stress dealing with all of the mortgage, insurance, etc but she’s doing amazing.

Of course we can’t wait to get moved, hopefully for the last time!

I was reading through this blog recently and I was struck but how much I used to share about what was happening in life. I knew no one would be reading it so I was less worried about what I shared and what anyone would think of me. You might think that I post less because I’m less transparent but the reality is that I’m just so busy. In the last seven years life has gone from being very self-centered and mostly recreational to quite the opposite.

Liliana is about to celebrate her 7th birthday which is dumbfounding. I’ve written this sentence over in my head several times but it all sounds so trite and quite honestly there aren’t words to reflect the experience of these seven years. It has been simultaneously incredible, horrible, fun and boring at the same time. In the course of that time we sold everything we owned and lived in an RV for over a year, traveling the country. We then sold our RV and bought our dream home. Then we sold that home to downsize our life and went on the road for another two moths to travel some more. Now this last year we moved into a new home, a much simpler one and we’ve settled into a suburban lifestyle that’s really been testing me.
\n\n\n\n
Okay, here we go. Family life has dictated that we need roots. We need a familiar place for Lil, a place that feels like home. She’s in school now and needs to be present for that. All of this means we should live the typical American life with all of the mundaneness that involves. My struggle is it feels contrary to everything inside of me. I want a family, without a doubt, but I don’t want the normal family experience. I really feel made for something different. I want to explore, I want to see the world. I want to do so on a whim, whenever my soul needs it most! This has made for some difficult conversations both with myself and Crys but thankfully she understands me and listens well to help me come up with a solution. But, at the end of the day I don’t feel like there are good solutions; either I choose what’s best for me or I choose what’s best for my family.

I think part of this is a mid-life crisis if I’m honest with myself. I can feel myself battling with my selfishness more and more. Choosing others is becoming a conscious choice, not a forgone conclusion. It has been helpful in some ways, I’ve learned to speak up for myself and make my wants and desires known. It has created a better relationship for Crys and I, for sure.

I know there’s something deep within me that craves spontaneity, I absolutely love it. It makes the typical American life with a child all the more difficult to stomach sometimes, but I do love it.

We’re beginning to have some conversations about what’s next for us as a family. Do we stay in Texas or do we begin dreaming about where to plant our roots? RV living is pretty much off the table, neither of us really wants that life. I have dreamed about living on the ocean; Crys is mostly concerned with living somewhere with mild winters and cooler summers (which is pretty easy coming from Texas). I’m excited for the next move but there’s non-trivial portion of my brain that’s worried that no matter where we end up the same malaise will set in, that I’ll refuse to be okay in any situation once the newness wares off. I’ll continue to do the necessary work and therapy to avoid that and otherwise trust that the part of me that loves change should be embraced and not battled.

It’s been four months since we said goodbye to our fifth wheel and moved into our new home in Texas. We’ve spent lots of our time getting the house furnished and settled, hanging out with family and adjusting to the biggest change in our life, Lil starting kindergarten. It has been quite an adjustment on its own but of course we’re also adjusting to not traveling anymore.

At first it didn’t bother me, I was so excited about buying furniture, having home improvements done, etc. These days, however, I’m finding myself quite nostalgic for the previous season of our life. If I’m honest I feel trapped. Trapped with a mortgage. Trapped because Lil is in school and our travel is incredibly limited. Trapped because we had to utilize all of our savings (tax and otherwise) to purchase the home and now we’re playing catchup. More than feeling trapped I just miss the feeling of endless exploration and discovery. Pulling into a town on the weekend, exploring for a week and then heading to the next town. We saw so much. Such things should be temporary, I guess?

Settling down in Texas hasn’t been without it’s rewards though! I went to see The Aristocrats and Meshuggah in concert in Dallas. I got a new Jeep Gladiator that really fits me perfectly. I’ve made some serious progress in my Blu-Ray/4k collection and of course I love our house. I’ve spent a large amount of time enjoying the back patio. We also finally are able to get great BBQ again. It has been a huge blessing to be back here.
In October I took a trip to Florida for a few days to attend the Halloween Horror Nights at Universal Studios. We got to go through several houses and had an absolute blast! While I was there Austin and I played through all of the original Silent Hill, something I’ll never forget.

I guess life is all about give and take. We’re giving up the excitement of life on the road, exploring the country and an endless string of new experiences, but we’re gaining roots, the ability to build relationships with family and friends and a home that we love.

In April of 2021 we sold everything we owned, including our home and went full time on the road in our fifth wheel. The experience has been everything I had hoped it would be. Our time together as a family and the memories we’ve made will stay with us forever. If you haven’t been following along on our journey you should check out the RV Living page. BUT, this season of our life is coming to an end because we just bought our dream home!

Our plan had always been to find some land and build. Well as we learned more details about the costs associated we knew it wasn’t a good option for us. We were pretty disappointed but we were excited to start looking at existing homes on the market but also a little leery of trying to compete in the crazy DFW market. We’ve heard horror stories about people putting in dozens of offers before finally winning a bid, we didn’t want to go through the heartbreak of falling in love with a home and being rejected. We started the hunt and within a couple of days we had found a home we loved, put in an offer and were under contract!

We close in a week and the process has been very smooth, but you probably want to know more about the house itself.
It’s a beautiful home that’s all on one level (something we really wanted). It sits on 1 acre and even has a couple of trees. We’re incredibly excited to have a pool and hot tub again, it’s something we’ve really missed since selling our home. I’m looking forward to enjoying the outdoor space and getting a nice tan. We have plans to get a large play set for Lil for the back yard so her and her cousins and friends can all play together.

One of the things I’m most looking forward to is replacing all of the stuff we sold when we moved into the RV. We’re looking forward to hunting for furniture that we love to fill out the house. I’m also really looking forward to furnishing the outdoor spaces to make them as cosy as possible. We also have a few renovation projects that we’re planning to start as soon as we close on the house including new flooring, painting cabinets, replacing countertops and installing lots of new ceiling fans. Once we complete those tasks I’m going to meet with a home theater company to begin the process of building out the media room. I’m really hopeful that I’ll end up with the home theater of my dreams!

I’m thankful that things have worked out the way they have. A month ago I wouldn’t have imagined that we would be heading back to Texas 4 months earlier than we had planned. I wouldn’t have thought I would be so ready to put an end to our travels. But I’m so ready. I have no sadness about ending our RV days. I’m so excited for the future!

This was a huge year for me both professionally and personally, in fact I can’t believe how much has changed.

We sold our home and moved into an RV!

The year started with incredible joy as we were finally able to have a viable pregnancy after adopting several embryos. Unfortunately not long after we suffered the loss of that pregnancy. With the new-found perspective of that loss we decided to stop putting off our dreams and decided we would sell our home and go full-time on the road in a fifth wheel trailer.

Selling our home was easy in the hot housing market, but actually getting our trailer on the road would take some time as we faced delays in getting a trailer hitch for our 2021 Cedar Creek 377BH. Finally in July we hit the road for our maiden voyage to Indiana. I’ve posted several blog posts about our RV travels throughout the year if you’d like to read more about the experiences we had!

Crys’ Bout with Sciatica
\n\n\n\n
One of the biggest hiccups in our travel plans for the year was the long episode of sciatica that Crys endured most of the last half of the year. When we hit the road in July Crys was already having some back/leg pain but we assumed it would pass over time. It didn’t. While we were in Wisconsin Crys woke up one morning and wasn’t able to move enough to get off the bed. We ended up calling an ambulance to take her to the emergency room where they were able to tell us that her leg problems were likely sciatica and her only real treatment was physical therapy or surgery and pain meds. She improved slowly but it became clear we were going to need to go back to Texas so she could get the help she needed.

Throughout the remainder of the year she had physical therapy and while she’s not back to normal her mobility is greatly improved! She’s doing so well that we went back on the road December 26th and I can already tell that she’s doing much better.

Liliana has really come into her personality. She regularly makes me laugh with her quick wit and sense of humor. She’s also been doing so well at making friends and approaching other kids without timidity. I love her, but of course that goes without saying 😉

Focusing on React
\n\n\n\n
If you know me you know that I love my work. Most of the time if I’m choosing my projects wisely it doesn’t feel like work at all. This year I decided to focus on improving my React skills as much as possible and I’m very happy with how things have gone. I managed to learn NextJS as well and now I’m even more excited about the possibilities. I’ve done almost no Vue this year which is fine by me.

One of my goals for the year was to rebuild this site in React + Headless WordPress which I completed earlier this year and even managed to upgrade it to NextJS before the end of the year.

One of my professional goals for 2022 is to learn and adopt TypeScript. I’ve been putting it off but now is the time.
Continue to explore the country in our trailer and prioritize new and memorable experiences.

I’m in the middle of a big transition in life. I recently accepted a position at 10up, an award winning web development agency with more than a few Webby Awards under its belt. Obviously this meant a transition away from my position at Gateway Church, a position I’ve held in one form or another for the better part of the last 6 years.
\n
One of the primary reasons for the job change was to be able to focus on developing projects in WordPress, Vuejs and React. My development interests have shifted some over the last few years as I’ve tried many new technologies and I’m feeling more confident than ever that WordPress and JavaScript are what I’m most excited about. But that’s not the only reason, 10up is also a completely distributed company with all 150+ of its employees working remotely from home.
\n
I love many things about working from home but what I’m looking forward to most is being there as Lil does all of her firsts. She’s going to be crawling soon and I’ll be there for it. I’ll be able to give Crys a break from her routine whenever it’s needed. I’ll be able to sit outside and work by the pool on nice days. All while working with a team of super-talented and passionate individuals on projects that’ll be used by countless people. I’m pretty darn pumped!

The transition isn’t without cost though. While I’ve definitely had a love/hate relationship with office dress codes, commuting times and all of the other stuff that goes along with working in an office environment, I’m leaving behind an amazing team of people at Gateway. We’ve done some incredible work over the last 6 years and had some wonderful laughs along the way. I’m going to miss them.

As part of this transition I had a week off work. I used part of this time to revive this blog and as I looked over the entries spanning back nearly 20 years I was reminded how valuable it is, even if no one else ever reads it. There are many things I would have completely forgotten if it weren’t for this blog, so I’m committed to carrying it on. Stay tuned, if you like.

Things are getting ready to change for the summer. After three years out of college I’m back in, and some of my other activities are going to have to be put on hold in order to make time for classes and homework. One of the most notable things that I’m going to have to do without for at least next semester is Bible Study Fellowship (BSF), which is by far the great opportunity cost of this round of schooling. That program has been the source of my spiritual growth over the last 3 years and I’ve grown to appreciate it a great deal.
Tonight is my first night of summer classes and I have to say that I’m excited. The class I’m taking is M118, which is a Finite Mathematics class. Kristen assures me that it will be difficult and that I’ll need to learn to give up some of my free time in order to get my homework finished. If there’s one thing that I grip tightly it’s my free time. However, I understand every investment requires a sacrifice.
One other change that the summer has brought about is a gym membership. After being without a membership for the last year I’m finally able to get one again and this time through the gym that I prefer. I’m really looking forward to getting rid of some weight again and doing some strength training. Hopefully I’ll be able to go in today to get the membership and then Jamie and I can start lifting Monday through Friday. I can’t wait!

Yesterday turned out to be a great day. When I got home from work I decided to mow the grass since it was getting a little long. It was nice to be outside with the soft breeze and the smell of fresh cut grass. I actually enjoyed it. There’s something about getting outside and doing work that really makes a person feel like they’re getting something accomplished.
