Friday night while taking video around the house I had an idea. Whether it’s a good idea remains to be seen, but it’s an idea… The idea is True Reality. It’s basically an honest look at the lives of 3 Wayne County residents. The motivation was primarily the disgust with most of the "reality" shows on TV today, which are nothing like reality. So, that’s where the name comes from. It’s my plan to finish a few episodes and then start putting them on the local public access station soon. I think it could be something that people around here are interested in.
\nThe major hurdle that I’m going to have to get over is my fear of taking my camera with me wherever I go. While I don’t want to make people feel like I’m invading their privacy, I want to be able to record things as they happen, which means having a camera around.
\nFor now I’ll be using my digital camera, but if series shows signs of success of any scale I may have to upgrade equipment.
\nJamie and I are starting a new weight lifting schedule. We’ve both been "taking a break" for a while and we’re ready to get going again. Because of Jamie’s hectic schedule we’re going to be going at around 6:30am on Monday and Wednesday mornings, which I’m really looking forward to. We went this morning and it was a great time. We did some treadmill and sat in the dry sauna for a while. It’s nice to feel energized when you get to work.

\"PowermacWith a possible Apple computer purchase on the horizon I found myself in a bit of confusion on the upcoming switch to Intel processors. For those who aren’t familiar with this news, the basic story is that Apple, after using IBM processors for quite some time, has decided to switch to Intel processors. The switch begins in the early summer of 2006 and should end by the end of 2007. So, with my mac purchase being somewhere around January I had to ask, should I just hold off and wait until the switch happens and buy a mac then? It wasn’t as easy to decide as I thought it would be.
\nThere are a few things that I have to consider. First the pros of buying now:

\n
    \n
  1. The current PowerMac line is increadibly fast, even at it’s lowest model. I believe that I can get buy with a dual 2.0Ghz machine thank you. Even though the primary motivator for Apple’s switch seems to be processor speeds, I don’t think there’s really that much different between the current G5 chips and the current Intel chips.\n
  2. \n
  3. Even after the switch, most all software released for macs will be compatable with both the IBM and Intel chips. It’s not like I’m going to be left in the dust wishing I had the Intel mac. Most are saying that Apple would be forced to support the IBM macs until around 2009. By then my computer would be a candidate for replacement anyway.
  4. \n
  5. The current PowerMac G5s are tried and true. They’ve been on the market long enough to have the bugs worked out and have been found to be very nice machines.
  6. \n
  7. Most are saying that the PowerMac line won’t be updated to include Intel processors until the end of the transition in 2007. This means rather than waiting a few months for my purchase I could likely be waiting more than two years. Yikes!\n
  8. \n
  9. There is an old rule that I haven’t seen mention of in a while: Never
\nbuy revision A of Apple hardware. How this applies in the x86
\ntransition is going to be interesting to see, but in the past Apple’s initial releases of new hardware have been plagued with problems. Most will remember the iBook recall issues a year or so back. I don’t want to be party to such a fiasco.
  10. \n
  11. Apple has said that they’re planning on releasing more IBM-based hardware before the transition is complete, so they’re obviously not planning on abandoning all of the IBM users out there if they’re going to release new IBM hardware before and during the transition.
  12. \n
  13. Apple’s next OS release, Leopard, will be supported by the IBM models. This means that Apple must support all IBM machines until around at least 2009.
  14. \n
\n

The pros of waiting to purchase an Intel based mac:

\n
    \n
  1. Having the newest hardware Apple offers. This is one of those hidden benefits that often takes a stronghold on me. Many of us want to have the newest, best version of everything. This is especially true of me when it comes to computers.
  2. \n
  3. The ability to have a dual boot Mac/Windows system. As much as I hate Windows, it’s a necessary evil for the time being. It would be nice to have Windows running on the same machine and have the ability to load Windows-only software.
  4. \n
  5. There are going to be some overall hardware improvements coming with the Intel macs. Speculations include: PCI Extreme, new motherboard designs, DDR2 memory, etc.
  6. \n
\n

Personally for me, I’ve decided to purchase a current IBM system rather than hold off and purchase an Intel system. If you’d still like to read some other opinions, here is a good thread posted on MacSlash about this topic. It answered many of my questions.

This was a huge year for me both professionally and personally, in fact I can’t believe how much has changed.

\n\n\n\n

We sold our home and moved into an RV!

\n\n\n\n

The year started with incredible joy as we were finally able to have a viable pregnancy after adopting several embryos. Unfortunately not long after we suffered the loss of that pregnancy. With the new-found perspective of that loss we decided to stop putting off our dreams and decided we would sell our home and go full-time on the road in a fifth wheel trailer.

\n\n\n\n

Selling our home was easy in the hot housing market, but actually getting our trailer on the road would take some time as we faced delays in getting a trailer hitch for our 2021 Cedar Creek 377BH. Finally in July we hit the road for our maiden voyage to Indiana. I’ve posted several blog posts about our RV travels throughout the year if you’d like to read more about the experiences we had!

\n\n\n\n

Crys’ Bout with Sciatica

\n\n\n\n

One of the biggest hiccups in our travel plans for the year was the long episode of sciatica that Crys endured most of the last half of the year. When we hit the road in July Crys was already having some back/leg pain but we assumed it would pass over time. It didn’t. While we were in Wisconsin Crys woke up one morning and wasn’t able to move enough to get off the bed. We ended up calling an ambulance to take her to the emergency room where they were able to tell us that her leg problems were likely sciatica and her only real treatment was physical therapy or surgery and pain meds. She improved slowly but it became clear we were going to need to go back to Texas so she could get the help she needed.

\n\n\n\n

Throughout the remainder of the year she had physical therapy and while she’s not back to normal her mobility is greatly improved! She’s doing so well that we went back on the road December 26th and I can already tell that she’s doing much better.

\n\n\n\n

Lilabean

\n\n\n\n

Liliana has really come into her personality. She regularly makes me laugh with her quick wit and sense of humor. She’s also been doing so well at making friends and approaching other kids without timidity. I love her, but of course that goes without saying 😉

\n\n\n\n

Focusing on React

\n\n\n\n

If you know me you know that I love my work. Most of the time if I’m choosing my projects wisely it doesn’t feel like work at all. This year I decided to focus on improving my React skills as much as possible and I’m very happy with how things have gone. I managed to learn NextJS as well and now I’m even more excited about the possibilities. I’ve done almost no Vue this year which is fine by me.

\n\n\n\n

One of my goals for the year was to rebuild this site in React + Headless WordPress which I completed earlier this year and even managed to upgrade it to NextJS before the end of the year.

I started this site 20 years ago. It has been my companion through most of my adult life. To celebrate its longevity I’ve completely redeveloped it from scratch with a new design, some updated content a whole new blog experience and a brand new photos section that I’m quite proud of.

The first edition of evanagee.com
\n\n\n\n

It has been with me throughout many different seasons and changes and while it has looked different over the years this new look is my favorite.

\n\n\n\n

The idea of a personal website has changed a lot since 2001 when I created the first iteration. For me this site has always been about me sharing pieces of myself with whoever is interested. Admittedly some of the blog posts can be pretentious or boring, which is why I left it alone for many years. But recently, as I started looking through some of the older content in the blog, my heart towards this site and its purpose shifted. This is for me. If someone happens along and finds something interesting, awesome, but that’s not my main goal.

Circa 2002
\n\n\n\n

I’m a web developer who’s obsessed with web development. My scrapbook reflects my tools of choice. So do I NEED a headless WordPress site built in React? No. But did I have an absolute blast building it? You bet I did! During this course of rebuilding I dove into previously unknown technologies like Vite and react-query, got very familiar with the WordPress REST API and finally achieved a design that I’m 100% happy with (with a little help from a free starter template).

\n\n\n\n

But now I finally have all of my blog and photos in once place in a cohesive experience and the ways I can intermingle that content are going to be very interesting.

\n\n\n\n

I also did something I’ve been putting off for a long time, I painstakingly went through all of my old blog posts updating images, video embeds and the like so they work properly in this post-Flash world. It has definitely given new life to this place!

2003
\n\n\n\n

One of the things that I loved most about browsing through the various versions of this site from the last 20 years is how much content is still here. I feel like it is the best place for me to look for memories that I have long since forgotten, and that’s what’s pushing me ahead and has gotten me excited about growing it over time.

\n\n\n\n

2005

2006 – still one of my favorites
\n\n\n\n

I have a few plans for the site, more web-dev specific blog posts, ways for users to interact with content more and I want to gather up all of the various videos I’ve created over the years and make them easily accessible. I’d also like to get some of my music online. As I’m also getting old AF I also find myself wanting to preserve and catalog the various projects that I’ve worked on over the years. I would love to be able to see at least screenshots of projects through the years, that’s a lot of work though…

\n\n\n\n

Once upon a time I also had this Items of Interest section that was a way to organize things that didn’t quite fit into the blog, almost like featured stories, I’d like to find a way to bring that back as well. In general as I looked through old versions of the site I found that they better captured the intent than more recent versions. “Photo of the day” is one of my favorites that I’ve sort of resurrected via the large background image.

\n\n\n\n

So, if you’re still reading, thank you! This app means a lot to me and I hope it shows. Happy browsing!

It feels as if my blog posts lately have been sporadic at best. I suppose it’s mostly due to all of the changes lately, most of them in my professional life. I decided it was a good time to write another entry and tell about the things that have been going on lately. So here it is.

\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n

In February of this year I accepted a position with a company in the online auction industry. I had six great months with them and created a relationship with my co-worker that I expect to endure for a long time. In August I accepted a contractor position with MemoryX.net where I remain. I’m working on some wonderful things and it has been a real pleasure working there. My design and development skills continue to be pushed to new levels and I’m absolutely loving it. Hopefully I’ll be able to share some of the details of what I’ve been up to at MemoryX soon.

Agee Design
When I’m not doing work for MemoryX I’m doing work for my clients through Agee Design. I’ve completed several projects and I’ve got a handful of active projects, one of which is redesigning the website for Jay and Jack of the well-known “Lost Podcast with Jay and Jack“. They’ve been a real pleasure to work with and I can’t wait to get the new site launched. I’ve also been working on a strategic relationship with another well known name in the podcasting community, Cliff Ravenscraft of the Generally Speaking Production Network (GSPN). And if you’re a Mac user you might be familiar with developer Phil Dow of Sprouted, who is most known for his popular Mac journaling application Journler. I’ve also taken the step of leasing a server so I can offer hosting to my clients if needed.

\n\n\n\n

Rediscovering a passion
Throughout my teen years I had one true passion, playing the guitar. When the college years hit and I was no longer in a hand I lost interest somewhat. I had been playing some, but the 1 hour+ playing time per day was long gone. Here recently I decided to join the hymn band at church. Like me, most of the others in the band hadn’t played in quite a while. I’ve watched over the last couple of months as each musician has dusted off their instrument of choice and rediscovered their love for it. It has been truly inspiring to me. We all, at one time or another, put time into learning these instruments; shouldn’t we take advantage of that talent? I plan to. I’m going to try and establish a regular practice time at least weekly, and try to work on learning some of the technical aspects of music that I’ve never learned. I did recently take a big step and posted a video of myself playing guitar online.

\n\n\n\n

Some EvanAgee.com updates coming
I’ve got a redesign of EvanAgee.com on my todo list. The design is getting a little stale and isn’t quite as indicative of my style or ability as I’d like. I haven’t even started on the design yet but I should soon, might even work on it this weekend. I’m hoping to do a large scale redesign, not just update the template.

\n\n\n\n

It’s hard to believe that another year is almost over. Here’s to hoping that 2008 is as good as 2007 has been. Soon I’ll have some more news to share with you all. 🙂

I’ve taken the leap and uploaded the first video to YouTube of myself playing guitar. Here goes.

\n\n\n\n
\n\n
\n\n\n\n

The solo section of “Line” a song I wrote and recorded. This video features the solo which I wrote to go with the song. HOWEVER, I’d love to see what some of you other YouTube guitarists would do if YOU were writing the solo for this song.

\n\n\n\n

To record your solo you can download the backing track by visiting:
https://blog.evanagee.com/Line_backing.mp3

\n\n\n\n
\n\n\n\n

Then, record yourself playing YOUR solo with the song and upload your video as a video reply to this video. I’ve given you 8 bars of lead-in time but feel free to use that space to add on some more solo time, it’s all up to you!

\n\n\n\n

Let’s see what you’ve got guys!

\n\n\n\n

(NOTE: I’m not looking to write a better solo for the song, just thought it would be fun to see what others might do if they were writing a solo. All videos uploaded in response are the property of their respective owners.)

\n\n\n\n

To upload your video response go to the YouTube page for this video.

\"AgeeI’m happy to announce that the Agee Design website V.1 is now live and ready for visitors! I’m very, very proud of the site, as it’s one of the best examples of my work to date. There are all sorts of cool technologies and methodologies at work. You can visit the site at http://www.ageedesign.com.

The work, however, is not quote finished. I’ve still got to design and develop the portfolio section. I’m still playing around with ideas for that, and should make a decision soon. I’ll also be adding more information to the services section to beef that up a bit.

\n

As I mentioned in an earlier vidcast, I don’t plan on doing any heavy marketing anytime soon, just want to take some steps to getting the word out there. A few new projects here and there would be fun.

\n

So, take a look and let me know what you think! Doesn’t it feel like the warm sun is shining in your face? 🙂

I happened to catch a few minutes of Fox News this morning. They had conducted a poll of their viewers of the “top 5 worst lyricists”. I love the idea that the general public is in any way qualified to judge the writing capabilities of anyone, but hey. So, I was a little surprised when I saw the results of this poll, not only were most of the lyricists on the list decent lyricists, but Sting was number 1 on the list. To those of you who aren’t familiar with Sting’s lyric writing capabilities, this is tantamount to having a poll question of “Is the sky sometimes blue” and the results coming back as “NO”. It’s just ludicrous.

\n\n\n\n

I’m not sure whether the poll was multiple choice or freeform or what. My guess is that if it was multiple choice Sting was placed there as an option merely for a control, so the overall accuracy of the poll could be judged later. They would know, if a majority of the polls came back with Sting as the number 1 answer, that the poll results are not accurate and therefore shouldn’t even be published.

\n\n\n\n

There are only a couple of reasons why it would make sense for Sting to have “won” this poll:

\n\n\n\n
  1. The Fox News viewers who took the poll weren’t familiar with who Sting was, thus putting him at the top of the list because “he must not be that good if I don’t know who he is”.
  2. The Fox News viewers who took the poll wouldn’t know talent if it slapped them in the face.
  3. Both 1 and 2
\n\n\n\n

There were other surprising lyricist in the top 5 such as Creed frontman Scott Stapp, who is by know means a wordsmith but still doesn’t deserve to be on this list. I just don’t understand why there weren’t any obvious choices in the top 5. There are so many carbon copy groups that are popular right now that should have all been sitting pretty at the top of this list, but nary a name was found.
So, to those of you Fox viewers who took that poll (and chose Sting as the worst lyricist), I’ll gladly spotlight your ignorance:

Children’s Crusade (Sting)
Young men, soldiers, nineteen fourteen
Marching through countries they’d never seen
Virgins with rifles, a game of charades
All for a children’s crusade
Pawns in the game are not victims of chance
Strewn on the fields of Belgium and France
Poppies for young men, death’s bitter trade
All of these young lives betrayed
The children of England would never be slaves
They’re trapped on the wire and dying in waves
The flower of England face down in the mud
And stained in the blood of a whole generation
Corpulent generals safe behind lines
History’s lessons drowned in red wine
Poppies for young men, death’s bitter trade
All of those young lives betrayed
All for a children’s crusade
The children of England would never be slaves
They’re trapped on the wire and dying in waves
The flower of England face down in the mud
And stained in the blood of a whole generation
Midnight in Soho nineteen eighty four
Fixing in doorways, opium slaves
Poppies for young men, such bitter trade
All of those young lives betrayed
All for a children’s crusade

Class antics

As you may or may not know, I’m taking a business law class this semester in school. So far it has been more like a general law class with the majority of the discussions and examples being unrelated to business. However, that has made things very interesting. I’m constantly amazed at how many people have absolutely no sense of social etiquette.
The man that teaches the class is a lawyer from Ohio, and has been for over 25 years, so he knows his stuff. You would think that any average adult would understand that he is teaching the class in order to bestow his knowledge of the law to us, and that he’s not there to give legal advice during class. One would think. However, that has somehow escaped a few of the students in the class. There’s a woman in the class that is probaly in her 30s or 40s that is constantly asking for personal counsel. You’d also think that a person would want to keep their private life PRIVATE, but not her. Every once in a while the instructor will be talking about a particular aspect of the law and all of a sudden she’ll pipe up and say something like "so, okay. My husband and I were being sued at one point and…". It’s crazy. She’s mentioned at least 3 different time that her and her husband have been sued. Only in good old Indiana.
Another great case was a 19 or 20 year old guy in the class. He looks like he’s probably into hunting, beer, women, beer and beer. He’s sitting there in class silent the whole time when all of a sudden he raises his hand and asks if there is "any way to remove a felony from your permanent record". The class got uncomfortably quiet and everyone just looked at the instructor as he squirmed under the question. Good stuff.
The class has been very interesting though, I’ve learned a lot about how the legal system works and all of the various things that you would expect to learn in a law class. There’s no homework and all of the exams are take-home, but they’re also essay questions, so it’s going to take some time to finish.
