\"FallThis weekend was one of the most memorable that I’ve had for quite some time. Friday evening Kristen and I went to see Richmond Civic Theatre’s production the Diary of Anne Frank, which was quite wonderful. The highlight of my weekend however took place most of the day on Saturday.
\nKristen had been planning all week to take a trip to Muncie to do some clothes shopping with her birthday money. I myself however have long since become tired of trips to Muncie so I opted to stay here in Richmond while she and her mom went out to clothes shopping bliss. What was I going to do all day while she was gone? Take pictures. I called up Jamie (my brother-in-law) and we both went out into the country, cameras in tow. What ensued was a wonderful day of exploration and sight-seeing in some of the most beautiful country wilderness that I’ve ever seen.
\nOver the last year or so I’ve been trying to improve my photography skills. I’ve always enjoyed photography but I’ve never been that good at it despite several attempts. After Kristen and her parents got me a digital camera for Christmas last year I decided this was the time to get started learning. Since then I’ve been taking pictures like a mad man and looking through them and trying to figure out why I’m not achieving the results I was looking for when I took the photo. The result has been better photos straight from the camera vs. Photoshopping them to death to get the “look” I was going for in the first place. So, our trek around Indiana was the perfect oppourtunity for me to learn even more and flex my photographic muscle.
\nI got several photos that I was very happy with and many more that are okay but not really anything great. However, after doing some reading this appears to be common amongst even professional photographers. One of the biggest tips that I got from some photographers online was to take as many shots of a single subject as I could take and then, when I was sick of the target, take a few more. It makes sense now but before I had this green sense of pride that I needed to have the picture framed and setup correct on the first shot or else I was just hacking. This isn’t the case. Most photographers suggest for every 500 photos you take you might find 10 or 20 that you really like. The others are just filler. So that’s what I did. I took close to 700 pictures on Saturday and ended up with a handful that I am really proud of.
\nThere were several things that happened while we were out that made the day special. We noticed a horse grazing in a pasture and decided to get out of the car and take some photos of it. Not long after, to our surprise, two more came right up to the fence. Needless to say we took more than enough photos of the two horses.
\nWe were driving through the country down a winding road and at one point we came around a corner and saw one of the largest expanses of soybeans that I’ve ever seen and just on the other side of the field was a large forrest of brightly colored trees and a small white house nestled between the field and trees. We spend quite a bit of time photographing that scene. It’ll be hard to top it as far as scenery goes.
\nIt was a glorious day. It’s very easy to get cought up in the stress of life and all of the things that you need to get done. Sometimes you need to take some time to notice and then enjoy the things that are around you.

Apple never fails to amaze me, and today’s announcements were no exception. Today Apple announced some not-so-great updates to the PowerBook line, some great changes to the PowerMac line and a new pro application for photographers called Aperture.
\n

\n

First, PowerBook

\n

\"PowerBook\"Not being a PowerBook user I wasn’t really that excited about the expected PowerBook announcements. However, I think if I were in the market for a PowerBook today’s announcements wouldn’t have done much for my wanting of the slick-looking laptops.
\nThe top of the list of improvements were improved battery life and new higher resolution displays on the top two models. The 15" model’s display resolution was bumped up to 1440×960, an impressive resolution for a laptop while the 17" model had an even larger boost to 1680×1050, which is the same resolution as my 20" Apple Cinema Display at work. Wow. The battery life for the PowerBooks was also moved up closer to 5.5 hours.
\nAll-in-all some pretty modest improvements in my book.

\n

The PowerMac

\n

\"PowerMac\"Rumors have been flying around for the last week about what we hoped would be upgrades to the PowerMac line, since it has sat in a dormant state for some time. Apple, again, didn’t dissapoint us. With all of the systems being bumped up to dual core processors and the best model sporting 2 dual core processors (called the QUAD) the current PowerMac line is looking pretty tough.
\nAll three of the PowerMacs now support DDR2 memory and the low-end model has a higher memory capacity! Previously the low end model could only support up to 4Gb, now all three come with the same 512 Mb and are expandable up to 16Gb! All three models also include PCI-Express expansion slots, again only available before on the mid and upper models.
\nAnother wonderful improvement that has been requested from PowerMac users for years was video card specs. The new PowerMac line now sport Nvidia GeForce 6600 LE cards with the mid and upper models having 256Mb of RAM and the lower model having 128Mb. Maybe not as much video memory as we had hoped for on the low model, but an improvement. As a matter of fact, the new video cards are now powerful enough to run the 30" Cinema Display (and you can run four of them at a time if you have 4 video cards).
\n
The single processor dual-core Power Mac G5 systems,
\navailable at speeds of 2GHz ($1,999) and 2.3GHz ($2,499) are available
\nnow, while the dual-processor dual-core 2.5GHz system ($3,299) will
\nship in November.
\n

\n

Aperture

\n

Another rather exciting announcement from Apple today was Aperture, a photo management and editing tool for professional photographers. Now, being only an ameture I don’t expect that I could take advantage of all of the features of Aperture. However, I’m a pretty strong Photoshop user so I can tell that this application is pretty amazing. Not only does it work increadibly well with photos taken in the RAW format (which Photoshop doesn’t do very well) it also looks to be one of the best interfaces I’ve ever seen for photo management. Apple does it again with their wonderful human interface design.\n

\n

I watched a couple of the video tours of the new software and was instantly amazed at how quickly the program deals with these increadibly large RAW images. Of course that’s mostly a product of the wonderful G5 it was demoed on, but still. One of the only bad things about it is the $499 price tag. The student version is only $250, but that’s still pretty steep.\n

\n

So now what?
\n

\n

If nothing else todays announcements made it clear which of Apple’s computers I’m going to buy. The new PowerMac specs have put my fears at ease and have set it apart more from the iMac. Will I be buying a QUAD? Not likely, but we’ll see.

\"AmericanFor those of you in the Richmond/Wayne County that happen to enjoy films I wanted to bring Richmond Art Museums new film series “fade-IN Film Screening Series” to your attention. From their website:
\n“RAM’s new film screening series, fade-IN (Focusing on Art, Diversity, and Education – Indiana) will showcase a variety of films that fall outside the box of mainstream cinema and were most likely not shown in our area. The series will include independent, foreign, and experimental films, and even a scattering of older studio works that deserve another look. Opening dialogue by local filmmakers and film aficionados along with discussion following the films will offer a unique experience to film lovers. Screenings will be held the last Friday of each month, September through June.”
\nThe first film of the series will be “American Movie” which was released in 1999 and tells the story of an amateur filmmaker trying to release his latest film. The film will be shown on Friday September 29th at 7:00pm in the auditorium at the Richmond Art Museum. Admission is $5.00 or $3.00 for Richmond Art Museum members. For more information see the Special Events page on the RAM website.

\"SunWhen I was in high school most of my thoughts of graduation were focused on the fact that I would finally be able to move away from Indiana. I had big plans, I was going to go to college in Boston and after that move out to Los Angeles to work in a recording studio. I thought I had it all figured out. So, why am I still living in Indiana? Well, despite popular opinion it’s not because I’m a loser and I couldn’t get out, quite the contrary. I want to live here.
\nSomething about being a teenager makes you blind to your surroundings. I was focused on the things I didn’t like about Richmond; the limited number of recreational venues, a seeming lack of culture and the fact that I was born here. I thought that Richmond was a black hole in the middle of an otherwise interesting and fun country, I would move to any other city in the country and then, like magic, I would be submerged in a community that had a sense of culture and identity.
\nSince I graduated I’ve come to see Richmond as not only a home but a desirable home. The small town feel of Uptown Richmond, the surrounding countryside and the ability to sit in my backyard and talk with neighborhood kids are all examples of the things I love about this town. There’s a young boy that lives a couple of houes down from us in the alley named Froggy. He comes to the door every couple of days to see if our dog Pepper can come outside for a visit. Every time he knocks on the door I remember what I love about this town.
\nAre you feeling like you need to get out of Richmond? Do you think that moving to another town is going to give you something that Richmond doesn’t? If so I would encourage you to think of the things that you’ll be losing by moving away.

I’ve had several people email me lately telling me that they found my website while looking for bloggers in the Richmond Indiana area. As recently as two years ago there were only a handful of us around here that even knew what a blog was much less actually have our own blogs. Now as the internet and its offerings become more common in households across the midwest we’re seeing a rise in the number of bloggers in the area. Chris Hardie has developed a listing of the local bloggers around town and it’s very exciting to see all of these people who share their lives with the world.
\nIf you don’t currently have a blog I highly recommend starting one today! There are several free services out there that allow you to setup a blog with little or no technical ability. Whether it’s an online journal or a place for you to share your ideas with the world, I for one would love to hear what you have to say.
\nHere are a couple of bloggers that aren’t yet on Chris’ list:

I’ve found a new love, and as many people who know me will tell you, it’s photography. The more comfortable I get with the basics of photography the more I love it.
\nI was thinking recently about some ideas for photography projects when I had an idea. I want to create an in-depth photo tour of Wayne County. There are some beautiful scenes in this area and I would like to share them with the world. I have to give some credit to Jane Holman with Waynet.org for starting the Wayne County, Indiana group on Flickr, which was part of my inspiration for starting the project.
\nOver the last couple of weeks I’ve been taking some time to go out and around Wayne County looking for areas that represent what makes Wayne County so great. Once I’ve had time to determine what locations I will be photographing I will go out and get some shots. I haven’t yet decided how I’m going to release the project, whether it will be online only, whether I will offer printed versions, or maybe even a calendar, but I’ll keep you potsed.
